But they conveniently omit the scout oath which states, “On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to GOD and my country and to obey the scout law to help other people at all times to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” God and religion have always been a pillar of scouting. Those who want to change scouting frequently quote the scout law which states, “A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent” and argue that scouting should want to share these values with everyone. Since its inception, scouting has been a religious-based organization that espouses traditional Christian values. The issue at stake is not discrimination but freedom of religion and the right of private organizations to set their own standards. I strongly encourage the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to reject President Robert Gates’ recommendation to admit gay leaders. I have been active in scouting for most of my life and am currently scoutmaster of a local troop. Below, a troop scoutmaster offers his view. A majority of Boy Scout troops are sponsored by churches. Others, however, were worried that such a change would conflict with their values. Many cheered the news that the group known to espouse the tenets of being friendly, courteous and kind would be more inclusive. Boy Scouts of America officials last month were urged to reconsider the ban on gay leaders in a speech by the national organization’s president.
