But they conveniently omit the scout oath which states, “On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to GOD and my country and to obey the scout law to help other people at all times to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” God and religion have always been a pillar of scouting. Those who want to change scouting frequently quote the scout law which states, “A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent” and argue that scouting should want to share these values with everyone. Since its inception, scouting has been a religious-based organization that espouses traditional Christian values. The issue at stake is not discrimination but freedom of religion and the right of private organizations to set their own standards. I strongly encourage the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to reject President Robert Gates’ recommendation to admit gay leaders. ![]() I have been active in scouting for most of my life and am currently scoutmaster of a local troop. Below, a troop scoutmaster offers his view. A majority of Boy Scout troops are sponsored by churches. Others, however, were worried that such a change would conflict with their values. Many cheered the news that the group known to espouse the tenets of being friendly, courteous and kind would be more inclusive. Boy Scouts of America officials last month were urged to reconsider the ban on gay leaders in a speech by the national organization’s president.

That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. He also may have used it in an interview or a letter, but the earliest citation establishing a connection that is currently known to QI is the one in the Yale Book of Quotations.Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.Ĭulture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful - and this is still in our DNA today. It is possible that Groucho or one of his writers heard the joke and then Groucho used it in a radio show, TV show, or other performance. “You’ve all heard,” he (Darcy McKeough) told the locked-up press, “of the politician who wound up his speech saying: ‘ladies and gentlemen, those are my principles, and if you don’t like them I have some others.’ If events I can’t foresee alter the basis of this budget and undermine its effectiveness, I’ll have no hesitation about coming back to it later in the fiscal year.” The wording used was similar to that in the version attributed to Groucho: 1975 April 14, The (Ottawa) Citizen, Temporary Budget by Harold Greer,, Ottawa, Canada. In 1975 a Canadian politician named Darcy McKeough was criticized for employing the joke as a humorous excuse for possible future changes in policy. These, gentlemen, are my principles, but if you do not like them I can change them. In 1899 the joke was told in Canada about a “great American stump orator”: 1899 February 17, Daily Mail And Empire, Great Meeting at Goderich,, Column 4, Toronto, Canada. The American candidate had a very good estimate of the best way to command popular support when, after having described such manufactured principles as he had got ready, said – “Them feller citizens are my principles, but if they don’t suit yer exactly, they ken be altered.” (Google News Archive, National Library of NZ, Papers Past) link The joke appeared again in New Zealand in 1878: 1878 August 18, The Grey River Argus, Published Daily,, Column 2, Volume 21, Issue 3123, New Zealand. It was something like the American legislator - “Them’s my principles but if you don’t like them - I kin change them!” ![]() He brought in the Provincial Loan Bill, declaring that, if the House did not accept it, he was prepared to adhere to his original proposal. Emphasis added to excerpts by QI: 1873 October 18, New Zealand Tablet, Weekly Epitome,, Column 2, Volume I, Issue 25, New Zealand. QI found the following version of the quip in a New Zealand newspaper in 1873. No exposure to sunlight (fatal), no contact with water (it will spawn loads of other mogwais) and no feeding after midnight (the mogwais will transform into gremlins). But of course they disregard the tenets of mogwai ownership. Gizmo is whisked away to be poked and prodded by the boffins, their boss an appropriately creepy Christopher Lee. By stunning coincidence, Billy Peltzer happens to be employed at the very same building, as a corporate artist, while his love interest from the first movie, Kate (Cates), toils there, too, as a tour guide. With that, a wrecking ball slams through the front door.įleeing, the terrified Gizmo is spotted by two scientists Dean and Lewis (named for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis) working for the millionaire and it’s off to the lab with him. A New York tycoon with wonderful hair – really, it’s fantastic – tries to buy him out. Second time out, the action begins back at the store of the now terminally unwell Mr Wing. And when Billy flouts the rules of mogwai ownership, Gizmo spawns a plague of gremlins. This, of course, is a poppet with strings attached. Mr Wing, the owner refuses, but his grandson slips Peltzer the magic fur ball. There, he attempts to acquire a furry mogwai named Gizmo as a gift for his son, Billy. Gremlins, which was very loosely inspired by a 1943 Roald Dahl novella, had started with failed inventor Randall Peltzer visiting a Chinatown curiosity shop. Spielberg had refused to be involved with Jaws 2 and, after some spitballing, shot down an ET sequel. Still, as one of Spielberg’s most astute proteges, Dante understood that, from a filmmaking perspective, sequels were a mug’s game. The potential for a Gremlins 2 was obvious. Even the official novelisation, by future Harry Potter director Chris Columbus, was a smash. Gremlins had an equally hot streak through the Eighties as it became a huge hit all over again on VHS. He went on to direct Explorers, Innerspace and the Tom Hanks/ Carrie Fisher misfire The ’Burbs. Did Dante want go to back into that inferno? Thanks but no thanks. Warner suits pushed constantly to cut the budget. The rubber puppets posed new challenges on a daily basis. Making the film had been an endless battle of attrition. To the surprise of almost everyone involved it proved a massive hit, however, earning more than $200m on an $11m budget.Īs the box office tills chimed out a jolly tune, Warner executives decided that, actually, they loved the gremlins – and wanted more of them. The film, which starred the relatively unknown Phoebe Cates and the completely obscure Zach Galligan, really only got made because Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Entertainment, was keen on it. Warner Brothers had been thumpingly lukewarm about Gremlins. ![]() Thank you very much for your information. I think I was using different settings in AO that was causing the issues. It’s gamified sure, but it uses real-world survival techniques, and mistakes have severe consequences. The most important thing you need to understand about Green Hell, is the simple act of surviving from day to day is where the fun is meant to be. Huh, trapped in an Amazon that pushes you to the brink of death, destroys your sanity and you may have to soil yourself on occasion…Why does that sound familiar? Another point in favor of Jordan's telling of the events: Vaccaro was fired in 1991-just six years after the deal took place. He liked their jumpsuits-and they were going to buy him a car.īut Jordan allegedly never liked Vaccaro, even before that first meeting. Rambling took Vaccaro to meet Jordan after a UNC game, and the hooper was completely sold by Adidas at the time. Affleck also incorporated a scene in which Vaccaro asks Rambling if he should visit the Jordans at their home-which we now know never really occurred. (A very good request.) Luckily, it wasn't out of the question. Jordan's mother "wasn't really in the script" at the time, Affleck told The Hollywood Reporter, but they eventually expanded her role because Jordan had one request: that she should be played by Viola Davis.
